When I first moved to my current house near Raleigh, NC, I was stuck without fiber internet, gbit down 35mbit up was the max spectrum would give me. To their credit, it was a good service, but with my homelab I craved more! Thankfully, within the last year ive gotten not one, but 2 fiber providers, Brightspeed and T-Mobile Fiber (aka Lumos). Because Im crazy, I got both of the best they offered, 2gbit, but brightspeed recently offered 8gbit for 100 bucks a month so I got it! While this review will be mostly talking about Brightspeed, Ill be comparing it against Lumos and Spectrum.<\/p>\n

Im very technical, but ill try to keep the very technical to the middle of the article, if your just interested in speeds and latency, read the next 2 parts then skip to the conclusion. If you interested in very technical details of both Brightspeed’s equipment and mine, stick around for the full article.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speeds<\/h3>\n

When I first got Brightspeed about 2 years ago, the speed was not that great. I paid for 2gbit but regularly got like 500mbit to maybe 1gbit to things. Coming from Spectrum gbit, I was not too pleased. However it did get better over time, till the point of basically everything getting 2gbit after about a year or so. Now with the 8gbit service, I do get 8gbit to some things like Huggingface, cachyos mirrors. Steam however seems to be limited to ~2gbit. I am able to regularly get ~2-5gbit to many things on the internet if your internet equipment can support it but 8gbit to a single target is somewhat rare. Id say the speed is more so for multiple high throughput connections to things vs single target throughput.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I have been speed testing this every hour for the past 30 days. One interesting problem with having such fast internet though is picking a good target to test the internet on… It turns out most iperf3 speedtest servers on the internet are max 10gbit for that whole datacenter… so pick your targets wisely. For me, I use 3 iperf3 targets based on which one is available for testing and completely forgo any ookla speedtests due to its high cpu requirement for 2git+ speeds. Iperf3 speeds are all within ~500mbits of each other when I set it up, so it should provide a good target. But the better test is to use multiple targets at the same time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Latency<\/p>\n

Latency is a bit weird on Brightspeed. Its variable in weird ways. Let me show you my ping graphs. I ping Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS, and Level3 DNS. I get wildly different pings to them. See below:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I understand that there will be differences, but not double the latency differences. To me, this speaks of a routing issue and low and behold, it was! ICMP traffic went through a different circuit out of Florida while TCP and UDP traffic went to Washington DC. The TCP latency is a little bit lower, but it is something to note.<\/p>\n

Latency varies by the route taken (more details in the routes section):<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Routes<\/h3>\n

    At the time of writing this article, Brightspeed realistically with nobody, its basically straight connects with Lumen (AKA Level 3) with Washington12, Jacksonville5, and Atlanta2 as the primary outlets. The ping weirdness mentioned above is because the path would go to Jacksonville and Atlanta vs Washington which had like half the latency. Given that US-EAST-1 is in northern Virginia, it would be optimal if all of it went to that Washington datacenter.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Oddly enough, There are peers in the ASN im in for 2 internet eXchanges, but the traffic is not routing though it, specifically\u00a0Internet eXchange points DET-iX (Detroit) and KCIX (Kansas City)<\/a> This might be changed in the future, but currently I tested it a bunch and I also sicked AI on it, and it could not get things to route though it.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Fiber deployments in North America overview<\/h3>\n

    To see if you can maybe get 8gbit, you have to be on the right fiber network. There are a few Fiber network standards in North America, G-PON and XGS-PON. G-PON is limited to 2.5gbit down 1.2gbit up, while XGS-PON is 10gbit symmetrical. You will have to see what your hardware standard is. Often they use a completely different backend so a simple plug it in elsewhere wont work and you might have to get new cable trenched to your house\/street.<\/p>\n

    Im located in Central North Carolina on a entriely new fiber build out. The service came with a real IPv4, no Carrier Grade NAT (CG-NAT) sillyness! IPv6 is technically supported (see below),<\/p>\n

    DMARC<\/h3>\n

    Outside they attached a Dmarc, kind of poorly. The fiber cable is left exposed to the elements and can easily be bumped or snipped to knock out the service. This is after It took them 2 attempts to trench the fiber to my house, the first time the buried fiber was damaged because the people who trenched it never tested it. overall, bad experience which tracks with Brightspeed.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

    Do take note of that exposed fiber cable going into the house. I dont believe this cable is armored, but im not 100% sure. Thankfully this is something I can easily replace which I will do by running conduit to the tmobile fiber DMARC one day.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    ONT<\/h3>\n

    Thankfully has a separate ONT and Router, which easily allows you to use your own router unlike many carriers now that have a ONT+Router Combo unit. The ONT is a Calix GigaPoint GP1101X.\u00a0 It has a single 10Gbit rj-45 Ethernet and runs off of a 12v 1.5a power brick OR a DC bus. It uses a SC\/APC single strand fiber connection for the inbound from the DMARC box. I have attempted to do the https:\/\/pon.wiki\/ WAS-110 bypass of the PON with no luck sadly… but it should be doable with someone who knows more about fiber networks.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Router<\/h3>\n

    Router I was given was a Calix GS7 10GE GS5239E. I did not use it, but it had a single 10gbit port, and 4 2.5gbit ports on it as well as WiFi 7. Ill instead be using my setup mentioned below. Spend a good amount of money on a good replacement like a high end Unifi Cloud Gateway Fiber<\/a> with a dedicated WiFi 7 AP like a U7 Pro XGS<\/a>. Dont skimp here as this is required for a good experience with no bufferbloat<\/a>. The absolute minimum id recommend for and all in one solution is the Dream Router 7<\/a>. If you dont want to spend the money on a good setup, stick with the 2gbit or 5gbit service. Its not worth it otherwise.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    My network Setup<\/h3>\n

    My primary router is a custom PFsense machine with a R9 5900xt 16 core CPU, 32GB of 3200MT ECC RAM, 100GB Intel E810-CQDA1 for LAN and 2\u00d725 Chelsio T6225-CR for the WAN in. Is this insane overkill? Yes! Why is the rig this insane? I do Inline IPS\/IDS with surricata, as well as alot of deep packet inspection analytics and 24\/7 packet capture recorded to a dedicated 2tb local nvne SSD. The core switch is a mikrotik CRS520-4XS-16XQ 100gbit switch. Downstream important clients are connected either at 25bgit or 100gbit. Wifi is handled by a Unifi U7-PRO of which i can reliably get 1.5-2.5gbit over wifi. I also have T-Mobile home internet as a failover in the event the fiber providers go out.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    ICMP<\/h3>\n

    ICMP inbound (ping) was required be enabled on your router for the internet to function at some time. They ( I think) ping from random AWS ip addresses to determine if a IP is active or not. If the ping fails, your DHCP address is revoked. Something like every 48 min if it does not pass the check, then your internet will disconnect for 12 min. I called and asked about this behavior and was told no network change was made, but it clearly was as it just showed up one day and persisted for 8 days until I packet captured and saw this behavior. I just recently revoked this rule to see if it was no longer the case, and I have not had any issues for a few days, so perhaps this requirement is gone… but who knows<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    IPV6<\/h3>\n

    IPv6 is technically supported but not really. They use something called a 6rd tunnel.<\/a> Basically, all your IPv6 traffic goes though IPv4 encapsulated packets to a server, specifically the address 206.171.2.64 with a 2602:: prefix. You might think that would be slow and higher latency, and your right! It sucks! I set it up for about a week but disabled it because I was getting on average +15ms higher latency to everything, and the speed was not good, about gbit at best. My advice? disable it unless you need IPv6 for something like gaming where NAT issues show up (xbox live comes to mind). On other carriers with proper IPv6 implementations like spectrum, you actually get lower latency and higher throughput on ipv6.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Customer Service and Outages<\/h3>\n

    Brightspeed is not known for having good customer service. Their customer service is so bad that its basically a meme on the internet with how atrocious it is. For example, They had a multi-day outage and only informed their clients on like day 3 with an update. No service outage alert, no “it will be fixed by X date” kind of thing, it was bad. So bad that I got spectrum internet again for cheap after 1 day of the outage and ran it as a failover internet provider. Since that outage, they have setup a service alerting platform that you have to opt in for, and I would recommend it.Their customer support is based in India and boy does it show. They can never answer a moderately technical question or direct me properly.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    With EVERY new fiber rollout though, I would recommend having backup internet for at least a year because there is always problems. Ive seen this with 3 different providers now.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Closing thoughts<\/h2>\n

    The 8gbit service for Brightspeed has been better than expected. Now if you ever have a problem, good luck on getting it fixed in a timely manner. This service is really for people who want multiple high throughput connections vs a single 8gbit download from a server. The price is hard to beat though, $100 a month for 8gbit is the best that I know of in North America as Lumos wants $240 and google fiber is $150 bucks a month. While I would switch to google fiber if I could, Brightspeed has been decent for a year now and I will be sticking with them for the foreseeable future. However, I will have my backup Tmobile home internet subscription still active do to brightspeed’s history.<\/p>\n
